The holiday season is now upon us. Though it seems that the last two months have flown by, we are just now getting to the crazy time of year after November. It is the time of year when everyone forgets how to drive, and in an effort to spread ‘holiday cheer’ to their loved ones on Christmas morning, they make up for it by cutting others off on the road for the 24 days leading up to the big day. Fortunately, this post is filled with photos from holiday’s past, so we can remember what peace was like.
This year’s trip to the pumpkin patch (pre-halloween) was a lot of fun. Ryken is now old enough to walk around and love the orange spheres resting on the ground for him to pick up, throw down, or hand to anyone who would take them. The hard part was finding the right one amongst the sea of pumpkins:
Fortunately, he wasn’t afraid to search:
After a very short time, he found the pumpkin he had been looking for!
Which was quickly replaced with another:
But even this decision was questioned only moments after he had picked it up:

Ah, at last. The one!
Obviously too big to be carried…why not sit on it?
And as is the tradition, lets pose for a family photo:
A few days after the pumpkin patch came Amy’s favorite holiday – Halloween. We both have a lot of great memories of the holiday, and were excited to dress Ryken up. Last year we had thought to dress him up like a Macho Burrito from Del Taco, but instead dressed him as a baseball player. Really, we just put him in baseball PJs, but he didn’t know any better.
This year, we decided to dress him up based on a clever tip Amy read about. The article said to create a costume around a toy that your child loves to carry around so they can bring it with them for comfort. Thus, Ryken the paleontologist was born!
In costume, he even excavated a rare pumpkin from the kitchen:
And walked a duck:
But above all, he just looked cute:
Now, skipping to a more recent holiday, Ryken had a bit more fun this year at Thanksgiving as he could eat everything on the table.
Nothing particularly eventful happened at meal time (which is always great news for parents). On Friday, Ryken and my parents took a walk on the trail near their house as Amy and her mom went shopping. Ryken has been showing an affection for animals recently, so it was fun for him to see some animals on the trail. One animal that seemed to show some affection towards Ryken was a horse:
It takes more than a giant animal with a giant tongue to scare Ryken away:
I love that you can see that he has a huge grin on his face from the back just by his scrunched cheeks.
After the horses, we stumbled across a group of chickens that he loved looking at. I was shooting photos from a distance, so I was a big concerned by how this situation would end up:
But fortunately, nothing disastrous happened. All in all, it has been a good holiday season with Ryken, and we are looking forward to spending time in Yosemite over Christmas. This should be a good test for some potential spring travels we have planned. And though the blog post may show up in February, there will be photos.
